search director of the Pain Clinic at Montreal General Hospital. His work on the neurophysi-ology of pain spans almost four decades. After obtaining his Ph.D. in psychology at McGill in 1954 and taking up fellowships in the U.S. and abroad, he joined the faculty of the Mas-sachusetts Institute of Technology in 1959. There he and Patrick D. Wall began discussions that led to the publication in 1965 of their now famous " gate control " theory of pain. Melzack joined the McGill faculty in 1963. This is his fourth article for Scientific American. Stimulation elsewhere in the body can sometimes be felt in a phantom limb.

Phantom limbs and neural plasticity.
The study of phantom limbs has received tremendous impetus from recent studies linking changes in cortical topography with perceptual experience. Systematic psychophysical testing and functional imaging studies on patients with phantom limbs provide 2 unique opportunities. First, they allow us to demonstrate neural plasticity in the adult human brain. Second, by tracking perceptual changes (suc...
متن کاملBeyond re-membering: phantom sensations of congenitally absent limbs.
Phantom limbs are traditionally conceptualized as the phenomenal persistence of a body part after deafferentation. Previous clinical observations of subjects with phantoms of congenitally absent limbs are not compatible with this view, but, in the absence of experimental work, the neural basis of such "aplasic phantoms" has remained enigmatic. In this paper, we report a series of behavioral, im...

After amputation, individuals often have vivid experiences of their absent limb (i.e., a phantom limb). Therefore, one's conscious image of one's body cannot depend on peripheral input only (Ramachandran & Hirstein, 1998). However, the origin of phantom sensations is hotly debated. Reports of vivid phantoms in the case of congenital absence of the limb show that memory of former body state is n...
متن کاملThe perception of phantom limbs. The D. O. Hebb lecture.
Almost everyone who has a limb amputated will experience a phantom limb--the vivid impression that the limb is not only still present, but in some cases, painful. There is now a wealth of empirical evidence demonstrating changes in cortical topography in primates following deafferentation or amputation, and this review will attempt to relate these in a systematic way to the clinical phenomenolo...

Observation of limb movements reduces phantom limb pain in bilateral amputees
BACKGROUND Mirror therapy has been demonstrated to reduce phantom limb pain (PLP) experienced by unilateral limb amputees. Research suggests that the visual feedback of observing a limb moving in the mirror is critical for therapeutic efficacy. OBJECTIVE Since mirror therapy is not an option for bilateral lower limb amputees, the purpose of this study was to determine if direct observation of...
